Don’t Neglect Yourself While on the Go: Fitness Tips For Those Who Travel

Posted on February 2, 2017

Traveling often seems like a perfect time to find excuses as to why you don’t need to keep up your fitness regimen. Many feel that traveling is a time to indulge, which it is, but let your health indulge as well! Staying active and healthy while on vacation will have you feeling better during your trip!

Opt to Walk:

This one seems like a given, as usually travel requires a lot of walking, but always strive for more. If you have the opportunity to choose between a short cab ride or a half an hour walk, choose the walk. Not only will get a little bit more exercise without really noticing it, but you will get to experience more of wherever it is you are visiting.

Get Creative:

Be creative with your surroundings. If you are visiting a more populated city area, look for a local playground and do a couple sets of runs, or up and down a set of stairs. If you are hiking or are some where more rural, try lifting rocks or drift wood. You may feel a little silly while you are doing it, but your body will thank you later.

Try a Class:

Look up classes in the area you are visiting, try something that the local would do. You will get a better feel for the culture of your specific travel destination while getting in a little exercise, and who knows, you will probably meet some people who can show you around and introduce you to some of the cities hidden gems.

Take time for your mental health as well, whether it is while you are enjoying a beautiful landscape or sitting at the airport. Try meditating to free your mind, get an app on your phone to help you stay focused as it is often hard to block out day-to-day distractions. Try journaling or sketching. It is a great way to relieve stress, and will be an interesting way to look back on your trip, and how you were feeling at the time.

Get a Fitness Tracker:

There are tons to choose from, that doesn’t matter. Get whatever suits your life best, but being aware of your daily steps, calories burnt, and heart beat will get you into a great fitness habit of wanting to exceed your previous day’s goals.

Choose Active Adventures:

For some of you this is all your vacations are, and that’s awesome! But for those of you who go on vacation to relax, try some active activities or excursions. Depending on where you are the possibilities are endless; go on a hike, try zip lining, snorkeling or even rent a paddleboard for the day. You may just find your new favorite hobby!
